Protecting polar waters and Arctic cooperation

Transcript

[Arun Thangaraj, Deputy Minister, Transport Canada]

Canada is committed to protecting polar waters and supporting Arctic cooperation. Canada was a leader in developing the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Water, known as the Polar Code, and will continue to advocate for its effective implementation.

[Joanna Manger, Director General of Marine Safety and Security, Transport Canada]

In 2023, Canada will propose that the International Maritime Organization designate an Emission Control Area in Canadian Arctic waters. This would reduce emissions of air pollutants, including black carbon, from ships in the Canadian Arctic.

In addition to being subject to the Canada Shipping Act, 2001, Arctic waters are also, unlike other Canadian waters, specifically subject to the Arctic Waters Pollution Prevention Act, which already regulates the deposit or discharge of waste in Arctic waters.
