Getting the equipment on your fishing vessel over 24.4 metres inspected

The equipment, or tackle, on all large fishing vessels must be inspected according to the requirements in the Standard for Inspection of Tackle on Large Fishing Vessels (TP 9912).

 

A large fishing vessel is one over 150 gross tonnage or 24.4 metres in length.

The Standard for Inspection of Tackle on Large Fishing Vessels does not apply to fishing gear, including net line and other gear for catching fish that is used in the water.

When must inspections be done?

  • An initial inspection must be done of all tackle and rigging plans.
  • At least once per month, a visual inspection must be done of all tackle.
  • At least once per year, a thorough inspection must be done of all tackle.
  • Every four years, a quadrennial inspection must be done of all tackle.

Who may do inspections?

The visual inspection must be done by the Master or Mate.

The initial, thorough, and quadrennial inspections must be done by a Competent Person.

The qualifications of a Competent Person are defined in Schedule II of the Standard for Inspection of Tackle on Large Fishing Vessels.

What inspection records must be kept?

A record must be kept of every inspection.

All such records, along with rigging plans and certificates (of new tackle), must be kept on board the vessel and be available for inspection.
